Who is Barros Luco?

Ramón Barros Luco was born in 1835 and was President of Chile between 1910 and 1915. His name became famous not for his time as president, but from a popular sandwich named after him. While in office, he would often eat a particular sandwich at Confitería Torres (pictured below).  At el Torres, he would order “carne con queso caliente en pan amasado” which is “steak with melted cheese on homemade bread”.

Above is the historic 19th Century building in Santiago where Confiteria Torres is located. It was opened in 1879 by Jose Domingo Torres,
a famed chef of an aristocratic family and remains open to this day.
